Going down under today, I’m featuring an artist ZF has been in contact for a while, but this interview has only come together in the last few weeks. Devant living in Melbourne, Australia has seen quite a bit of success in the past 6 months, releasing tracks with House for Her and Sally Traxx. A young DJ/Producer with a lot of potential, he has kindly given “E – Know” to us for free download. The track features catchy piano synths and vocal snippets, all on that old school vibe, which will get your retro groove following.

ZF: Where does the name ‘Devant’ come from?

Devant: It’s a word that really stuck out to me one day during French class in high school many years ago. It translates to “in front” which is how I’ve always wanted my music to be but also my background is part French. It’s a bit cheeky and a bit personal which I think sums me up pretty well!

ZF: What makes your musical style different to other artists?

Devant: I come from a very old school punk rock musical background. Bands like The Dead Kennedys, The Ramones, Bad Brains, etc. are all people I look up to. I aspire to get that raw gritty sound that’s full of attitude and translate it to dance music when possible. I also use lots of vintage and modern hardware when making music and jam things out to see where it takes me.

ZF: If you could DJ with any artist who would it be?

Devant: It would probably be Jeff Mills. Two 909s and six turn tables sounds like a blast!

ZF: Have you got anything big coming up in the next couple of months?

Devant: I have a new EP out on Rotterdam based Sally Traxx records that is out now.
Four tracks of house that I’m quite pleased with overall.

ZF: What makes a good performance or producing session to you?

Devant: Performance would definitely be making the crowd happy but finding fulfilment in myself. I’m a big believer in not pre programming sets. I like to rock up with a big bag of records and a couple of USBs and communicate to the audience. I play either house or techno depending on the night but I like to merge the two together and play stuff that hopefully the crowd isn’t familiar with, regardless of if it’s old or new. As far as a good producing session it would have to be when everything is flowing naturally. I’m an absolute night owl and there’s nothing more satisfying than starting a new track after dinner and listening back to the solid god-knows-how-many-hours  as the sun rises!

ZF: What is your most valued material possession and why?

Devant: It would have to be my Roland TR-909 drum. No explanation needed.

ZF: Is there something you would like to do more of in the future?

Devant: Definitely play more gigs. I’ve been really focused just on producing music for the past year and finishing uni so I’ve neglected playing out a lot. I’ve also been working on a live set for what feels like forever which you can see examples of on my instagram. Hopefully it sees the light of night sometime soon!

Thank you to Devant for his time and we wish him luck in the future!
