Danger & Love in Paradise

Scroll down to content

Love & Danger in Paradise is an amalgamation of ZF’s cultural fascinations. Inspired by likes of Vice City, Drive and Giorgio Moroder, for our annual themed compilation project, we sought out artists that create and craft neo-nostalgic sounds.

A retro musical direction drove the selection process, pulling tracks from italo-disco and indie dance genres. Each of the twelve hand-picked artists added a distinctive sonic uniqueness to the album. Cosmic, groovy and melodic club-ready works, all designed to timewarp the aural sense.

This curated collection musters up visions of midnight road trips, neon-lit city wanderings and dark disco discotheques, because in reality – what hath night to do with sleep?

Akin to previous releases, proceeds from this release will be donated to a charitable cause, specifically, the WHO coronavirus relief fund. The contributions will go towards helping doctors and medical staff across the world, assisting them in battling the pandemic.

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
To me, the word Paradise points to a time and place with no stress or negativity. It’s a feeling of wonder and joy, untainted by anything. Paradise is to feel free to truly express who we are without constraints. Paradise is a warm, magical tropical island with music and friends seen through an old 80s analogue camera.

Favourite retro movie and why?
Terminator 2. I was obsessed with this film as a child. The soundtrack left such an impression on me for years to come. This is where my fascination for synthesisers, the future and sci-fi first started.

Who or what inspires me to make nostalgic sounds?
Anything that takes me back to growing up in Amsterdam. Old films and cartoons like the Racoons, Alfred J Quack (Dutch Cartoon) and Thundercats!
Some of my biggest influences are Micheal Jackson, Kate Bush, Phill Collins, Gloria Estefan, Queen, Jean Michelle Jarre, Georgio Miroder, Toto, ABC, Prince, Enya, Fleetwood Mac. The theme tune from the film Lambada. Also any multicultural music from the 80s.

Favourite retro movie and why?
I have many favourite retro movies but I think Rocky 4 is the one I don’t get tired to watch over and over again. Ive watched it since I was a little kid.I love the soundtrack and Vince DiCola’s made a great job on every track for the movie.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
I think it reminds of when I was a child and all those cool memories that I relate while listening to 80´s music or when I’m working on a new song.

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
Paradise for me is an (un)achievable state of mind where, in that moment, there are no ailments, inconveniences or consequences. It is often thought of as an idyllic place, to be found, and is associated with sunshine and beauty, but Paradise, I think, is more complex than that.

Paradise is something bespoke to the beholder, and not necessarily a physical place, but an experience, an experience of weightlessness where each of our perceived imperfections of the physical world are forgotten, and where pursuit of pleasure is the only agendum.

In that way, Paradise is quite hedonistic, a trait it shares with dance music, and unsurprisingly, I think many people, including myself, experience our ‘Paradise’ on the dance floor, where we can escape the terror of everyday life and forget all of its vices, encounter euphoria, tolerance and community and feel part of something greater.

Parfum Ko

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
For me, paradise is a place where I will go if I am a gentleman and make good music!

Favourite retro movie and why?
In the spirit of the 80’s, I was influenced by a French movie called ‘Tchao Pantin‘. This film shows a very particular atmosphere of Paris, dark and punk. And the movie soundtrack is great!

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
90% of my playlist is composed of nostalgic tracks, so I guess I’m a nostalgic man who composes nostalgic music.

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
Good music, good beer and good company

Favourite retro movie and why?
Has to be Scarface due to it being so similar to GTA Vice City which has one of the greatest soundtracks ever and which played a huge part in my music taste today.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
It could be anything, usually when I’m listening to any sort of music i’ll hear something that gives me an idea and I’ll have to go try it out.

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
Family, friends, beach, music and food. Not having to stress about anything

Favourite retro movie and why?
Drive; of recent times. Love the way it was shot and of course the soundtrack. Transformers the movie is a close second. Love the soundtrack too!

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
I’m an 80s kids so the sound of a kick drum and synthesizers are so natural to me. I reflect on periods of my life and the emotions that stirs when I write music. Sometimes my tracks are purely made for the club while others are for more laidback listening

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
One liter of tanning oil & guatemalan ancestral drink Muñeco (or cusha) on the rocks.

Favourite retro movie and why?
Cinema Paradiso, i love italian films with great sound design, in this case was the king Ennio Morricone.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
In my case, i had a really nice childhood surrounded by latin pop influences (Mid/late 80’s), for me it was the golden era of latin suave power with artists like Emmanuel, Menudo, Los Chicos and even Magneto.

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
Paradise reminds me of a place in the Universe where positive energy and biodiversity comes together and is concentrated in magical peaceful to co-exist, illuminated by cosmic colors.

There are similar places on Earth, like the Coral Sea which surrounds the island where I live. The Lagoon of New Caledonia is classified as World Heritage because it’s a real paradise.

Favourite retro movie and why?
I’m a fan of ’80s thriller movies so I have some favorite movies in my pocket. But in this context I will tell you “Jaws” without hesitation. This cult film caused quite a stir when it was released and even more so in the Pacific Islands.

Steven Spielberg is a genius. He has managed to frighten several generations with his own cocktail. The characters are well written, Jaws ‘attacks are so scary, and John Williams’ music is perfect. A good movie to watch with friends for a special “retro” evening.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
I’ve loved electronic music since the 2000s. I’m from the “post 90” generation, so I didn’t experience the “electronic boom”. Immersing myself in this rich musical culture today is my way of reliving those times.

I am fascinated by French artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Daft Punk and Vitalic. To create my music, I take inspiration from Damon Jee and Darlyn Vlys. I like their music, Dark disco and Indie Dance. They bring together old and new generations. It’s a breath of fresh air!

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
For me the word paradise means the liberty of enjoying the life where everything is possible . A perfect harmonious environment  full of love.

Favourite retro movie and why?
My favourite retro movie is Pulp fiction by Tarantino , an amazing  Soundtrack ( Dusty Springfield , Kool & the Gang , Chuck Berry…. ) with different style of music captivating the spectator, a  badass story with action and drug. Big actor like Travolta. It’ s a classic for sure.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
I produce nostalgic songs, because for me the best Time of the Music was 80’s/90’s , the music make the people happy, the song Was full of love to escape the problem in the real Life . And the best feeling it’s to make happy someone.

A place where you can live with your all of your family members and best friends. Where you can do anything you want. And a place without stress and the hurry of modern day society.

Favourite retro movie and why?
My favourite retro movie must be Back To The Future. Because of all the amazing 80s vibes, the time machine and of course Marty Mcfly Nikes.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
Great disco artist like Koto, Patrick Cowley, The flirts, Divine and Bobby Orlando. But also newer artists like Skatebard, David Vunk, Tjade and Biesmans.

Vanity Project

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
Paradise is more about freedom of time than a specific place, being able to dedicate time to doing music or taking the time to relax or do nothing at all is the most free feeling.

Favourite retro movie and why?
I recently rewatched Network, really love how claustrophobic it gets as it progresses. It also seems to have come back around and feels more relevant now than it did when I first watched it.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds?
I think collecting records, learning about what gear they were made with and then beg/borrow/stealing my way into being able to have a play with whatever machine I’m looking into. It’s great to sit down with a machine and accidentally find a sound that’s really familiar, or to zone out and find something completely different from what you had initially intended.

Hanzo & Yaman

The word Paradise – what does it mean to you?
Paradise can be a state of mind, where no burden is present, just the moment and the feeling of total pleasure. Something contrary to our daily lives, thats why ”Paradise” is wishful thinking and something like a utopia in human history.

Favourite retro movie and why?

Yaman: If I have to pick one now, I would say 3 Women by Robert Altman, which I rewatched recently after many years. I would consider it retro because it has a very psychedelic athmosphere and a 70’s look which we would consider today as retro. I can’t think of any other movie that has such a mesmerizing mood and it is very well written and has great acting in it.

Hanzo: Really hard to say. Maybe Brazil by Terry Gilliam? There are so many good movies out there, as much as good music. My question is; what is retro today? Nowadays the level of retro is definitely reached much faster then years before. If you watch a movie from 2005 that can feel mighty retro in 2020. Actually before 2020 anything can fill that out. People touching each other in public? People without masks? Love on the dancefloor? And you ask yourself ”Was that really possible?”.

Who or what inspires you to make nostalgic sounds ?
Recently we got a lot of great inspiration from our various artists release on our label Belly Dance Services. But of course there are numerous heroes of the past and the present. When it comes to gear we dig almost everything from the 80s and 90s, when the music had it’s transition period to electronic. Blending the old and the new is always interesting to us. But in the end we don’t really strive to make nostalgic sounds, the term that would fit us better would be ”timeless
